This rotating field induces a current in the rotor, which in turn creates its own magnetic field. The interaction between the two fields causes the rotor to spin, albeit at a slightly slower speed than the rotating magnetic field, a phenomenon known as "slip." This slip is a key characteristic of induction motors and allows for smooth torque delivery without the need for complex control systems. The simplicity of this design makes induction motors highly reliable and durable.

The benefits of AC induction motors in EVs are compelling. They are less expensive to manufacture than permanent magnet motors, as they do not require expensive rare earth metals like neodymium. They are also highly robust, capable of withstanding high temperatures and harsh conditions, making them suitable for high-performance and heavy-duty applications. The absence of magnets means they have very low cogging torque (the pulsing sensation at low speeds), contributing to a smooth and refined driving experience. Leading EV manufacturers, most notably Tesla, have used induction motors in their vehicles, demonstrating their capability for high performance and efficiency.

The market for AC induction motors continues to be a strong segment of the overall EV motor market. While permanent magnet motors currently dominate in some vehicle classes, induction motors hold a significant share, particularly in applications where cost and robustness are paramount. The market for induction motors is expected to grow, reaching $15.0 billion by 2035, reflecting their continued importance. The electric vehicle motors market is characterized by this ongoing competition and innovation between motor types, with AC induction motors remaining a vital and reliable technology in the electric vehicle revolution.
