Automotive EMC Testing Radiated Emissions: Ensuring Vehicles Don't Disrupt the Electromagnetic Spectrum

As per findings from WiseGuy Reports, the automotive EMC testing market is experiencing robust growth driven by the increasing complexity of automotive electronics and stringent regulatory standards. A key area of focus is automotive EMC testing radiated emissions, which measures the unintentional electromagnetic energy that a vehicle or its components can radiate into the environment. This testing is vital to ensure that an automobile does not interfere with other electronic devices, from nearby vehicles' safety systems to broadcast radio and critical communications infrastructure.

Radiated emissions testing evaluates the electromagnetic disturbances emitted by electronic modules, wiring harnesses, and other components. For components, the primary standard is often CISPR 25, which covers a frequency range from 150 kHz to 2,500 MHz . In a CISPR 25 test, the Device Under Test (DUT) is placed on a ground plane inside an absorber-lined shielded enclosure (ALSE) . Emissions are measured using antennas specific to different frequency bands—monopole, biconical, log-periodic, or horn—positioned at a 1-meter distance . The standard specifies five limit classes (Class 1 to Class 5), with the vehicle manufacturer dictating which class a particular component must meet based on its location and proximity to sensitive onboard receivers .

At the vehicle level, other standards come into play. ISO 11451-2 specifies a method for testing the immunity of vehicles to electrical disturbances from off-vehicle sources, using an on-vehicle radiation source to test the vehicle's susceptibility, which is a form of radiated susceptibility (immunity) test . For component-level testing, SAE J1113-41 is a key standard, also covering radiated and conducted emissions from 150 kHz to 1000 MHz to ensure electronic modules don't interfere with vehicle radios or other sensitive electronics . The test setup mirrors that of CISPR 25, using absorber-lined chambers and biconical or log-periodic antennas to simulate real-world electromagnetic environments .

The increasing number of wireless technologies in vehicles—like infotainment, GPS, and V2X—makes radiated emissions testing more critical than ever. These tests are essential for risk management, allowing engineers to detect and fix interference sources before products reach the market, thus reducing the risk of costly recalls and protecting the manufacturer's reputation . As the automotive EMC testing radiated emissions market continues to expand, the rigorous application of standards like CISPR 25 and SAE J1113-41 will be crucial for ensuring the reliable operation of modern, technology-rich vehicles.
