Could "modular wearables" make chronic disease management more affordable for everyone?

The way we wear medical technology is changing, thanks to the rise of modular adhesive systems. A major trend is the "split-design" patch, where the expensive electronic sensor is reusable while the soft skin adhesive backing is a simple, disposable part. This approach allows people living with conditions like diabetes to replace their adhesive every few days without having to buy a whole new device. It’s a smart move that lowers the long-term cost of health monitoring and makes high-tech care accessible to a much broader audience.

These modular systems are being paired with "hybrid" chemistries that offer the best of both worlds: the strong initial grip of traditional materials and the clean, painless removal of silicones. Engineers are now creating adhesives that can withstand the rigors of a morning workout or a hot shower without budging, yet "switch off" their bond when it's time for a change. By making these patches more reliable and easier to live with, the industry is ensuring that patients actually stick with their monitoring routines, leading to better long-term health outcomes.

Do you think "reusable sensors" with disposable backings are the most effective way to reduce medical waste?

We would love to hear your opinion, so please leave a comment!
